Cookie Policy

The cookies and local storage we use, and how to control them.

This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and similar technologies (such as browser local storage) that MapNinja uses, and how you can control them. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.

What these technologies are

Cookies are small files a site can store in your browser. Local storage is a related browser feature that lets a site keep small amounts of data on your device. MapNinja uses local storage for progress and essential cookies to keep you signed in.

What we use today

  • Strictly necessary - sign-in. The API sets an HTTP-only player session cookie that expires after 30 days. Google sign-in also uses a short-lived cookie to verify the sign-in request. Signing out removes the current session.
  • Strictly necessary - theme preference. Remembers your light/dark choice so the site loads without a flash. Stored in local storage on your device.
  • Strictly necessary - progress tracking. Remembers which locations you have marked as found, per map. Stored in local storage on your device; sent to your account when signed in. Browser progress from before sign-in is imported only when you choose to import it.
  • Analytics - PostHog. On public pages, PostHog records page visits and interactions so we can understand how the site is used. It uses cookies and local storage to recognize a browser across visits. It does not run on sign-in or account pages.

The sign-in, theme and progress storage supports features you actively use.

Advertising

We do not currently run advertising scripts. If we add them, we will update this policy and explain how to control them.

Managing cookies & local storage

  • Use the “Reset progress” control on a map to clear its saved progress.
  • Clear your browser’s cookies and site data to remove everything MapNinja has stored locally.
  • Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and local storage per site in their settings.

Clearing this data signs you out and removes local preferences, guest progress and unsynced changes. Progress already synced to your account remains available after signing in again.
